Overview

Thunder is a rough awned, two-row winter malting barley developed by Oregon State University. Area of Adaptation and primary use of the variety: Thunder was selected for release based on its malting quality profile and agronomic performance, primarily under irrigated conditions in Idaho. Thunder has potential under dryland conditions in Oregon and Washington. In high rainfall environments, west of the Cascades, a comprehensive program of fungicide protection is required for optimum performance. Thunder has passed the American Malting Barley Association (AMBA) pilot and plant scale programs will be on the AMBA recommended list for 2019. Variants and Frequency: No variants have been released at this time. Resistance to disease and pests: Thunder is considered resistant/moderately resistant to stripe rust.   Thunder has been deemed susceptible to both leaf rust and scald. Thunder has displayed low levels of susceptibility to Barley Yellow Dwarf Virus (BYDV). Growers west of the Cascades are encouraged to use insecticide seed treatments to combat BYDV, as well as foliar fungicides for control of scald, leaf rust, and stripe rust.
